6 Healthy Foods for a Tasty Diet

You may not be able to have too much cake, but just like any healthy treat, dieting does not have to be bland and boring.

To make it easier, we've complied a list of foods to make reaching your goals simple and tasty while trying new foods along the way.

1. Dates

It's 2pm, you've been working for 5 hours and your energy is taking a nose dive. What should you do instead of reaching for candy bar and/or that 2nd or 3rd cup of coffee? Grab some dates.

Finally, a type of "date" that will actually help your diet!

Dates are often called “nature’s candy” and are packed with vitamins such as magnesium, potassium and iron. The richness in fiber content also help with any trouble in the bathroom department. They are chewy, sweet and delicious.

Enjoy dates dry, fresh or pop them into a creamy smoothie for added natural sweetness. In paste form, they are also a nutritious substitute for white sugar in baked goods.

2. Spelt

Spelt an ancient grain--meaning that it has had literally centuries to build up it's super food status.  As a “super grain”, it is packed with protein and important nutrients such as iron and magnesium.

One cup spelt contains 25 grams of protein and 19 grams of fiber, thus putting off those dreaded hunger pangs.

Spelt in it’s flour form is a more nutritious alternative to all purpose flour in baked goods and can be substituted at a 1:1 ratio.  In addition, it's malleable flavor allows it to be easily incorporated into your diet.

Move over crepes--Spelt can also be enjoyed sweet or savory. For savory, add it to your favorite soup or stew. For sweet, eat it for breakfast by preparing it as you would oatmeal with milk, cinnamon and fruit.

3. Matcha Green Tea Powder

Matcha! Try saying that 5 times, and fast. What is it?  It is highly concentrated green tea powder.

With it’s rise in popularity outside of asian countries, it’s powerful health properties are no longer a secret.

What are the secrets? Matcha is rich in antioxidants called catechins, which are known for their disease and aging fighting properties. In addition, it has powerful detoxification abilities, boost metabolism and promote fat burning.

Once you discover it's earthy taste, you'll want to add it to every healthy treat from cookies, pancakes, ice cream and even smoothies.

Enjoy a matcha latte at home by first whisking together a teaspoon of matcha powder with 1 cup of warm milk or water. Sweeten with honey if you’d like and enjoy the healing power of matcha!

4. Açaí

It’s pronounced ah-sah-ee, not ah-sai. Yes, it is the exotic sounding fruit that trendy hipster enclaves and social media influencers are making gorgeous “bowls” with. It is yet another super food that is suddenly on trend but is simply a healthy yummy, cheap snack in its native South America.

Funny how that works out huh?..**cough** hummus **cough*..

Unlike some food trends, the hype about the amazonian açaí berry is warranted. These tiny, delicate berries pack a punch like no other thanks to their richness in antioxidants. Having read this far, you should know by now the body healing powers of antioxidants. Açaí berries pack three times the amount of antioxidants as the same amount of blueberries..just let that sink in. They are said to improve skin, digestion and cholesterol and energy levels among others. Yes, finally something the hipsters can be proud of popularizing!

Unfortunately, these berries are highly perishable, so it is rare to find them in fresh form outside of South America. Hence, the best way for you to enjoy the remarkable benefits of Açaí is by purchasing it in powder and frozen puree or juice form. Blend it up in a smoothie for a cold tasty, guilt free treat.

So you think unicorns are magic? Try coconut oil. From cooking to oil pulling and skin care, the uses and benefits of coconut oil are countless. As one of nature’s healthy fats, it has been said to help maintain a healthy weight, improve digestion and prevent overeating.

Unlike a unicorn latte, a jar of coconut oil is a great investment thanks to its multi use properties. It can be easily incorporated into your diet by swapping out your routine cooking oils with coconut oil.

As a quick tip, if your going to use your jar of coconut oil for additional uses such as hair and skin care, use a sterile spoon each time--no one likes hairy stir fry!

6. Kimchi

Yes, it is served as a mini side dish at your favorite Korean restaurant and no, that is not the only way it can be enjoyed! There is a reason why this fermented Korean treat has soared in global popularity in recent years.

Fermented foods have tremendous health benefits for gut health due to its high probiotic content. Don't let the word "probiotic" scare you. They are already prevalent in some of your favorite healthy treats such as yogurt, kefir and kombucha.

Made with a combination of healthy ingredients such as cabbage and spices, kimchi is packed with antioxidants, vitamins and fiber.  Such combinations give kimchi powerful immunity, fat burning and detoxification qualities.

Kimchi can be enjoyed on anything you would put pickles on and on it's own. And no, it will not magically make that burger a healthy treat.
